Building 12 - The Comic
LATE PRE-COMIC YEARS

Summer, 1998.  In the vast amounts of time afforded by long term unemployment, Chris goes back and reworks the scripts to Building 12, and creates a promotional poster of the entire cast as it was comprised at the time in order to pitch the idea as a TV show.  The title is shortened to “Battleground U:  Building 12”, the remainder of the longer title becoming simply a tag line.  Reason:  The title was just too frikkin’ long.

Spring, 1999.  Chris is hired by David Koladny-Nagy to illustrate issues 3 and 4 of David’s comic “Mad Beanz”.

Winter, 1999.  After a long stretch of working full time and drawing in between, Chris finishes his work on “Mad Beanz”.

Spring, 2000.  Chris begins work on a story tentatively entitled “Jin: the dual souled girl”, later truncated to simply “JIN”.  Pitch ideas for Building 12 are put aside to work on pitches for the more easily marketable “Jin” story.

Fall, 2000.  Sick of working on pitches that go nowhere, Chris relegates Building 12, Acheron, NFG, and Jin to a closet and works on simply drawing for fun for a while.

April, 2001.  Chris goes to Japan on short notice and spends 10 days doing nothing but shopping for anime.  Experience with the Dojinshi market invigorates him to go back and turn one of his old stories into a comic.

August, 2001.  After lengthy consultation with others, Chris decides to finally get off his ass and draw a comic and decides to draw.... “Jin”

Starting at the top... This is the fabled Building 12 promotional pitch poster bearing the old "Battleground U - Building 12" moniker.  The board of trustees is notably bigger, and they all wear sunglasses.  They also don't have names yet (check the bottom of the poster where I've simply given them letter designations).  Everyone looks a bit... different, but you can still recognize most of them, save Yuki, who is still in her "Alice" form.  I guess Grey looks pretty crappy too.

Below that are some further design reworks.  I actually like these designs, (except for Sarah, who looks like crap).  Still this wasn't the right look.  Craze's ponytail is starting to thin out, but for some reason I went back to those wide eyebrows.  Maybe I should have left Jack with that pointy chin... God damnit... (Third-child agrees on the pointy chin)

Below that is the first incarnation of the physical Building 12 dorm.  It was an older building here, but it still had those big windows over the door for the TV lounge, and the same layout.  I just wanted it to have a bit more of that 60's school building look that I hate than this older more classic brick look.  Building 12 is supposed to be ugly and crappy, not antique.

September, 2001.  Realizing “Jin” could be way too difficult as a first project, Chris changes his mind and starts drawing “Building 12” almost directly from the old teleplays.  Last minute character designs are whipped up and finalized.  Yuki becomes Japanese due to the original character’s name being way to similar sounding to Alex’s.

July, 2002.  After fretting over how to pay for printing, Chris decides to release Building 12 as a web comic in order to save money.

August, 2002.  Chris finishes Issue 1.

Here we have pictures drawn the day before I started page 1 of issue 1.  Gurney has been completely redesigned and is seen here in his final form, along with the first picture EVER of Joe that I liked.  After being cleaned up, this became Joe's final design.  Craze's ponytail has reached fully thinned stage.  I also reworked his eyes to be all jagged to represent his being a bit off kilter.  His hair is almost at final stage, but I made the part a bit wider.  Brian has lost his eyes to a permanent reflection in his foggy glasses, but has retained the grease spot on his forehead.  I also squared his face out a little.  That's pretty close to Jack's final look too, though the pose it a bit off.

Below, we have the last minute rush to change Alice into Yuki.  Again, this was done about a day before I started drawing because I wanted all the issue 1 characters squared away before started.  The bangs on the Yuki on the left weren't working for me, so I slicked  her hair back and played with her eyes a bit too to get the final Yuki on the right.  I has also just been reading Love Hina, so I added an "alien antenna hair extension" to Alex, giving her her final look.

I would also like to note, that somewhere between this picture and the point that I actually started drawing Yuki in the comic, she appears to have gotten some wild breast augmentation.  I have no idea how or why that happened, but I like Yuki's new boobs, and I'm not switching them back.
